"To me, "metanoia" represents a necessary and natural process of transformation. I embrace all of my phases, recognizing that change is a part of growth. "- Elen Harutyunyan
Can you introduce yourself in a few words? (What do you do, what are you passionate about?)
I'm Elen, an entrepreneur in education, though I’m equally drawn to the world of arts and fashion. I’m someone who thrives on creative thinking and tactical problem-solving. My analytical mindset allows me to approach challenges strategically, but at my core, I’m fueled by the beauty of art, design, and the power of aesthetics. I believe in surrounding myself with things that inspire and uplift—whether that’s through fashion, art, or a well-curated environment.
What moments in your daily life make you feel the most present?
The moments that make me feel most present are when I'm engaged in something that brings order to my life. What I define as "useful" can vary depending on my mood. Some days, it means diving into work with focus, pushing through sleepless nights; other times, it might be as simple as unwinding with Netflix or embracing moments of stillness. What matters most is that the activity contributes to either gaining new knowledge or having a fresh experience, no matter the field.
How do you balance practicality and creativity in your everyday routine?
I don’t have a special trick for balancing practicality and creativity—it comes naturally. I focus on doing what feels right in the moment, without limiting my aspirations, but I also maintain discipline because I’m responsible for my well-being. I believe that the key to practicality is executing everything to the best of my ability within my resources and time constraints. As for creativity, I see myself as a natural creative thinker, something that has developed over time through experience. I don’t force it; I simply let it flow when it feels right.
How do you see fashion as a form of self-expression, beyond just clothing and accessories?
For me, fashion is a way to communicate the various aspects of my personality, my mood, beliefs, and experiences. A recent example would be my admission to a prestigious MBA program—it's a new chapter in my life. As a result, I've found myself gravitating towards more 'office-core' attire, reflecting my deep motivation to pursue my degree and a competitive career. Fashion, for me, is a reflection of where I am mentally and emotionally. Who knows, in a month I might be embracing a “cottage-core” phase—after all, personal style evolves as we do!
Do you often experiment and change your style and what is the reason for that?
I would say that while there are a few constants in my personal style—simplicity, interest, and a playful edge—my style definitely evolves with different phases of my life. I don’t follow fleeting trends, especially micro ones. Instead, I let my mood dictate what I wear. For example, six months ago, I was in my "sport-chic" era, favoring sporty, comfortable looks. But now, as I’ve become more career-focused, I’ve invested in office-appropriate outfits to reflect that shift. There are certain pieces I’ll never wear, but I’m always open to experimenting based on where I am mentally and emotionally at the time.
Do you remember your very first bag and is there a story related to it that you would like to share with us?
I do remember my first luxury bag quite vividly. It was a significant investment at the time, and I spent a lot of time choosing the right one, as it felt like a huge amount of money for me back then. Interestingly, though, it turned out to be rather impractical over time, but I never sold it. It just quietly collects dust in my closet. Looking back at that choice, I can see how much my style has evolved and how different I am now. I find it fascinating how bags (and fashion in general) can tell the story of personal change and growth.
How do the things you carry in your bag reflect your personality and lifestyle?
I try to keep my bag minimal and practical, mainly because I change bags daily, and transferring everything from one to another can be quite time-consuming. I also aim to keep it light for health reasons, as carrying a bag on my right shoulder can eventually affect my posture. As for the essentials inside, it’s always a lipstick, lip pencil, wallet, hand cream, and a phone strap for when I travel. I’m not the type to carry random items like pills, napkins, or umbrellas. I prefer to take only what’s necessary. I think this reflects my need for order and structure. If my wallet has enough funds, I know I haven’t forgotten anything!
If you had to create a “life essentials” list, what would be on it—beyond material things?
That's a tough one, but if I had to create a “life essentials” list, beyond material things, I would include my confidence, intellect, and sense of humor. I’d also add a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and of course, a positive mood. Like most women, I can get irritated at times, but when I’m in a calm and good mood, I feel more motivated to do meaningful things. These elements keep me grounded and ready to take on whatever comes my way.
What does the concept of “metanoia” (a transformative journey) mean to you in your life?
To me, "metanoia" represents a necessary and natural process of transformation. I embrace all of my phases, recognizing that change is a part of growth. I try to be less judgmental of others when I see them going through their own transformations. I believe this is how we evolve, becoming more mature and grounded as time passes.
What role does sustainability play in your choices, and how does that connect with owning a 57 metanoia
I admit I have a bit of a light shopaholic tendency, and sometimes shopping acts as a form of therapy for me. However, I always prioritize quality in my choices because I can't stand seeing things lose value over time—it’s disappointing. When it comes to accessories, I specifically look for pieces that will last forever, ones that won’t wear out. A 57 metanoia is one of those pieces. I know that the bags I own from this brand will never disappoint me, and they’ll always have a place in my closet, which is the key factor in my decision-making. While sustainability isn’t something I consciously focus on when making a purchase, I think about the longevity and utility of a piece relative to its price. As a finance person, it’s all about investing in things that offer lasting value and return.
Which 57 metanoia bag do you own, and why did you choose it?
I actually own about three or four 57 metanoia bags in different sizes and colors. I couldn’t pick just one, so I decided to buy several! Sometimes my sister "borrows" them, so I end up needing to buy new ones. Out of all of them, the middle-sized bag has proven to be the most practical—though that’s probably predictable. I usually use my
57 metanoia bags as a complementary piece when wearing something more festive. It’s never an issue for me to carry two bags with different functions in one outfit—one more festive, the other more practical. As you can imagine, the 57 Metanoia bag is usually the practical one. I tend to avoid very vivid colors, preferring to keep things modest, much like the creators of the brand.
If you could describe your bag as a companion, what kind of personality would it have?
If my bag were a companion, it would definitely be practical yet dependable—always there when I need it but never overbearing. It would have a calm and understated personality, much like I prefer in my style, and would know when to step up and when to blend in. It would be reliable, never letting me down, and always ready for any situation—whether it's complementing a festive look or just being the go-to accessory for everyday life. It would be a quiet, supportive partner, keeping everything in order without making a fuss.
If your bag could tell a story about you, what would it say?
If my bag could tell a story, it would definitely be full of sarcastic comments and black jokes—just like me. It would have a witty take on all the unexpected moments in my life, probably poking fun at the times I’ve overthought my choices or laughed at myself. It would speak to how I’ve learned to roll with the punches, keeping a sense of humor even when life throws curveballs. And while it may seem calm and simple on the outside, inside, it’s got a sense of humor that never lets the tough moments get too serious.
If your bag could hold one non-physical thing (a feeling, a memory, an idea), what would it be?
If my bag could hold one non-physical thing, it would be the motto I live by: "Plan things ahead, but solve problems only when they arrive, and always prioritize your health." It’s a reminder to approach life with balance—being prepared for what’s ahead but not letting stress take over what’s out of your control. Above all, it reminds me that my well-being is the most important thing to value.
What’s a piece of advice or a thought that has stayed with you over the years and still influences how you live today?
Nothing specific comes to mind right away, but one piece of advice I always remind myself of is the importance of differentiating what is comfortable from what is truly useful. It’s easy to get caught up in comfort, but I’ve learned that real growth and progress often come from choosing what’s most beneficial, even if it’s not the easiest option.
